The secret to handling the weakness question

Weakness-question

A balanced approach

When I ask my clients which interview question they struggle with they usually identify, “the weakness question”. Answering this question requires a balanced approach that demonstrates self-awareness, honesty, and a commitment to grow. Here’s a structured way to tackle the weakness question effectively:

Choosing the right weakness

  • Don’t pretend you only have strengths
  • Choose a genuine weakness that isn't critical to the job
  • Avoid clichés like "I'm a perfectionist" or "I work too hard"
  • Select a weakness you're actively improving

Some appropriate weaknesses to consider include:

  • Difficulty delegating to work to team members
  • Fear of public speaking
  • Tendency to shoulder too much responsibility
  • Work-life balance challenges
  • Limited experience with a non-essential skill

Structuring Your Answer

Follow this three-part structure for a compelling response:

  1. Outline the weakness: Describe your weakness concisely
  2. Provide context: Explain how this weakness has affected your work in the past
  3. Highlight improvement efforts: Outline specific steps you're taking to combat the weakness and demonstrate your progress

Example Answer

Here's an example using this structure:

"An area I'm working on improving is my tendency to accept too much responsibility. In the past, this led to some burnout and some deadlines extensions. To combat this, I've created a project management system to better prioritise and allocate tasks and have been practicing declining non-essential projects. As a result, my time management has improved and my workload is more sustainable."

Key Strategies

To make your answer more effective:

  • Be genuine: Authenticity is key; interviewers are able to detect insincerity
  • Show self-awareness: Demonstrate an understanding of your areas for improvement
  • Focus on growth: Emphasize your commitment to personal and professional development

Relate to the job: If possible, connect your improvement efforts to the role you're applying for

Avoiding Common Pitfalls

When discussing weaknesses:

  • Don't mention weaknesses central to the job requirements
  • Avoid overly personal weaknesses unrelated to work
  • Never claim to have no weaknesses - this is not an authentic answer to the weakness question
  • Refrain from turning the question entirely into a strength - this is transparent

By following this approach, you can transform the weakness question into an opportunity to illustrate your self-awareness, commitment to growth, and alignment with the position you're applying for.
